NCC Approves 50% Tariff Increase for Telecom Services Amid Sector Losses

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted approval for telecommunications companies to increase tariffs by up to 50%, citing the sector’s mounting financial challenges following the naira’s devaluation.

Despite earlier efforts to stabilize voice and data costs amidst rising inflation, the regulator ultimately deemed the adjustment necessary to address the industry’s sustainability.

Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, stated in a release on Monday that the decision aligns with the commission’s mandate under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA).

“The approved adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50% of existing tariffs—significantly lower than the over 100% proposed by some network operators—was carefully considered in light of ongoing industry reforms aimed at ensuring sustainability,” the statement explained.
