On Thursday, Hon. Jafaru Ango, the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, addressed the team at the Ministry of Youth and Sports premises before their departure.

He emphasized the Governor Abdullahi Sule-led administration’s commitment to youth and sports development, highlighting significant investments made to empower young people and foster self-reliance.

“It’s a thing of joy that we are going to participate in the Zonal Eliminations in Jos, Plateau State. This trip is made possible by our sports-loving Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, through his swift approval of adequate funds for the qualifiers,” Jafaru said. He urged the athletes to leverage their proximity to the host city and deliver outstanding performances.

Jafaru further underscored the importance of this event as a preparatory stage for the main games in Asaba, urging the athletes to give their best to secure their place. He congratulated them on their selection and reminded them to be exemplary representatives of Nasarawa State.

“Nasarawa State is synonymous with discipline; you are all young talents with great prospects. Help bring pride to our State, yourselves, and your families. Uphold the values of our State and avoid any negative commentaries,” he advised.

Permanent Secretary Chief Barr. Isaac Danladi added that the State Government has provided all necessary support for the contingent.

“Everything needed for your welfare has been provided. We are not going for a tea party but to make both the State and ourselves proud,” he said, expressing hopes that some of the budding talents would emerge as prominent figures in sports.

The 125-member Team Nasarawa, comprising 80 athletes, seven coaches, seven sports secretaries, and 20 accompanying officials, will compete in seven team sports events. The Zonal Eliminations will take place from August 28th to 31st, 2024, at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium in Jos, with teams from Benue, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, and F.C.T., Abuja also participating.
