National Youth Games 2024: 35 States Gear Up for Competition in Asaba

Thirty-five states and the Federal Capital Territory will be competing in the eighth edition of the National Youth Games, which began on September 9, 2024, in Asaba, Delta State. Rivers State is the only state not participating this year.

Team Lagos has been particularly successful, having qualified for 10 team sports, including basketball, football, rugby, handball, and hockey, after the Southwest Zonal Elimination in Osogbo.

The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, expressed pride in their achievements and stressed the importance of the Governor’s support for youth sports development.

The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has called on all states to present their most promising young talents, emphasizing the games’ role in the long-term development of Nigerian sports.

The Games Village was opened on September 9, with the official opening ceremony scheduled for September 12 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.

Team Oyo, led by Honourable Wasilat Adegoke, has been urged to aim for gold, building on their momentum from the Zonal Elimination Games.

The Commissioner assured the team’s safety and welfare, highlighting the Governor’s approval of necessary funds for their participation.

The National Youth Games, running until September 19, is expected to uncover the next generation of Nigerian sports stars.
