On the third day of the National Olympic Trials in Benin, Esther Elo Joseph maintained her winning streak at home and won her first national title in the women’s 400m.

The silver medallist from the African Games has been working hard to win the championship in order to build on her strong home performance this year.

With a record of 51.70s, Joseph defeated the more seasoned Patience Okon-George in the final 20 meters to win. This time is not too dissimilar from her Personal Best (PB) of 51.63s, which she set in March at the African Games.

This is a massive improvement for the quartermiler as she placed 6th with a time of 53.44s at last year’s edition of the National Trials held at the same Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Okon-George ran her fastest time in the last five years to finish 2nd with a Seasons Best (SB) of 51.76s while Imaobong Nse Uko was 3rd in an SB of 52.04s. Omolara Ogunmankinju came in 4th in 52.15s.
