National Assembly Queries JAMB Over “Excessive Spending” on Meals, Mosquito Fumigation, Other Expenses in 2024

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance has expressed concerns over what it termed “excessive expenditures” by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on items such as meals, refreshments, and fumigation during 2024.

During a review of JAMB’s 2025 budget proposal, Senator Adams Oshiomhole criticized the board’s spending of N1.1 billion on meals and refreshments and N850 million on security, cleaning, and fumigation, questioning the necessity of such expenses.

Oshiomhole remarked, “What did you fumigate? Is it mosquitoes that consumed all this money?” He further expressed disapproval of JAMB spending N600 million on local travels.

Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Abiodun Faleke, also questioned why JAMB, as a self-sustaining revenue-generating agency, still receives federal government grants, suggesting instead that the board retain its revenue contributions to fund its operations.

The committee warned that federal allocations to JAMB may be reconsidered in the 2025 budget.
