Nasarawa United showcased resilience and attacking prowess as they overturned an early deficit to defeat Ejike Ugboaja FC 3-1 in their opening match of Group ‘A’ at the 3rd edition of the Abuja Unity Pre-season Tournament.
The Monday clash at Area 3 Football Pitch, Garki, Abuja, saw the Solid Miners stunned in the 14th minute when a miscue by goalkeeper Mohammed Galadima allowed Solomon Akubo to slot home into an empty net, giving the Abuja-based side an early lead.
However, Nasarawa United quickly regrouped, and by the 30th minute, their young midfield sensation, Sabo Gambo, curled in a stunning free-kick to level the scoreline. The equalizer spurred United on, and both teams went into the half-time break on even terms.
After the restart, United wasted little time asserting their dominance. In the 55th minute, veteran striker Chinedu Ohanachom capitalized on a clever dummy pass from Awal Auta, poking home from close range to put his team ahead.
As the clock ticked down, Nasarawa United sealed the victory in the 87th minute when substitute Nandom Emmanuel capitalized on a goalkeeping error by Canaan Sadiq, calmly tucking the ball into the back of the net.
Speaking after the match, Coach Usman Adams praised his team’s performance, particularly their ability to bounce back after conceding an early goal. “The boys showed great character today. Coming from behind is never easy, but we stayed composed and took our chances when they came,” he said.
The 3-1 win propels Nasarawa United to the top of Group ‘A’ with three points. They will next face Atlantic Integral FC on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at 8 AM, looking to build on their promising start to the tournament.
