Team Nasarawa proudly joined 31 other states at the opening ceremony of the 8th National Youth Games, held on Thursday at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
Clad in vibrant green and white outfits, the Nasarawa contingent made a strong impression during the march past, fueling high hopes for success as the Games begin on Friday.
The event was officially declared open by Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In his address, the Minister highlighted the importance of the Games, saying, “The Youth Games hold special significance as a beacon of hope for the revitalization of the sports industry in Nigeria.” He further stressed that grassroots sports development is crucial for nurturing young talents and strengthening Nigeria’s position in global sports.
Nasarawa State’s athletes, selected for their strengths in specific sports, were sent off with high expectations. Hon. Jafaru Ango, Nasarawa’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, confidently urged the athletes to make the state proud: “Try as much as possible to make us proud by putting up an ‘A’ performance there.” He commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his support and reminded the athletes that their performance would impact future rewards from the state government.
Competing in 14 sports, including Boxing, Cycling, Judo, and Weightlifting, Team Nasarawa aims to bring home medals. Coach Bashir Bassey, speaking on behalf of the coaches, assured, “We will be disciplined, committed, and will obey all rules and regulations throughout the competition. We promise to outperform our previous achievements.”
With 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials participating, this edition of the Games is the largest in its history. Nasarawa’s delegation includes 137 members, led by the Director of Sports, Lawrence Shammah.
The National Youth Games, designed to develop future champions and promote national unity, will culminate on September 19, 2024.
