While he didn’t participate in the recent match against Satech FC in the ongoing OWO UNITY CUP tournament, Laniyu’s experience and insights continue to be invaluable.
Although he wasn’t featured in this specific match, his contribution to last year’s tournament showcases the dynamic nature of football team selections.
In an exclusive interview with Sports247, Laniyu conducted a candid assessment of his recent performance relative to his past performances.
He acknowledged that his current form did not align with the anticipated standards, which subsequently resulted in his presence on the bench for the match.
This highlights the meritocratic principles inherent in the sport, where consistent optimal performance is crucial to securing a position in the starting lineup.

“I didn’t perform well this year that is why I was on the bench and did not feature in the match. And that is how football is. If you do not meet the standard, you have to make way for those who are doing well. I look forward to the next match. If I perform well in training, maybe I’ll be a part of the team to feature in the match.”
Touching upon the team’s overall performance against Satech FC, Laniyu expressed a sense of pride in Nakamura Strikers FC. Yet, he conceded that the team’s actual performance fell short of its potential, particularly during the initial half of the game. He highlighted a brief lapse in concentration that influenced their overall gameplay.
“I am proud of my team, but we did not perform well the way we were supposed to. We lost our concentration in the first 45 minutes. We play better in the other competition that is why we have lots of fans and we are meeting the opposing team again on Friday at the Mushin challenge cup and the atmosphere would be different. The playing there would be better than this.”
Nonetheless, Laniyu promptly acknowledged the team’s impressive performance in a different competition, leading to an expanding fan base. He anticipated a rematch against the same opposing team in the upcoming Mushin Challenge Cup on Friday, expecting a unique atmosphere and a higher level of competition.
In terms of broader aspirations, Laniyu articulated his ambitious goal of representing Nigeria on the international football stage. This aspiration holds profound personal significance for him. He acknowledged the imperative of unwavering dedication and persistent effort to transform this aspiration into reality.
“That is the main goal. I have plans and I hope God will do it for me. I have to work extra hard for that to happen. I can only be seen while on the field of play not on the bench.”
As Nakamura Strikers FC navigates the OWO UNITY CUP tournament and other contests, Akeem Laniyu’s insights and unyielding determination offer a glimpse into the dedication and aspirations that propel grassroots football players towards excellence.
