Former Super Eagles midfielder Oladimeji Lawal has praised the organizers of the ongoing Naija Super Eight play-off, commending their vision for bringing glamour and increased financial rewards to Nigerian club football.
Lawal, who represented Nigeria in various international tournaments, including the 1987 FIFA U-16 World Cup and the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship, expressed his satisfaction with the concept of the Naija Super Eight.
Lawal, currently serving as the General Manager of Ibadan-based club Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), acknowledged the positive impact of the Naija Super Eight in elevating the status and financial prospects of Nigerian club football. Despite 3SC’s early exit from the play-offs, losing the Southwest ticket 0-3 to Remo Stars, Lawal remained optimistic about the future of his young players.
The Naija Super Eight, organized by Flykite Productions, has introduced lucrative financial incentives for participating teams. Each game rewards the teams with N3 million, and the national finals promise even greater rewards.
The runners-up will receive N9 million, while the winners will be awarded N25 million. Additionally, the best player in each match will earn a personal prize of N250,000.
Reflecting on 3SC’s performance in the competition, Lawal emphasized the team’s dedication and effort against Remo Stars. Despite having only five days to prepare due to unforeseen circumstances, Lawal expressed confidence in the potential of his young players and their ability to shine in future competitions.
