This will indeed sound like a fairy tale. Two decades ago, Colonel Ibrahim Biu was returned as the Competition Secretary of the Kaduna Golf Club. In that period, a major Pro-Am golf tournament played.
Then there was a lull until the same man, two years ago, returned as Captain and a total reformation came the club’s way. Sponsored tourneys flooded the whole place and the Clubhouse and other facilities of the club that used to have a strong dose of shabby appearance were completely rebuilt. Considering this unimaginable feat, some club members called Biu a hero.
Some hissed that he was highhanded and ruled like Adolf Hitler on the loose. Others tagged him an opportunist who readily cashed on goodwill from long-time friends to stamp on the ground an authoritarian rule that was beyond any comparison. Some even mentioned that he was arrogant, belligerent and short-tempered.
Whichever way, Biu is not backing down. The man says he is only in pursuit of fairness and that he is filled with self-belief. Biu believes that as a soldier, oppression is a mere occupational hazard and that liberal hypocrisy of free speech would never make him feel less proud of his two glorious years as Captain of the Kaduna Golf Club. Without a doubt, he vehemently claimed that no Captain in the history of this Club formed in 1921 would do better than he did in just two years despite what critics called his shortcomings.
As they say, there are no straight bananas and so, Biu too did not claim he didn’t step on some toes to get things straightened out.
“You know people must talk, especially when you are no longer in charge”, Biu stated. “The truth is I am a mover who can change things. And remember that to change things, you may not have the reason to please anyone. But I did things to achieve a greater good for the majority of members.
