Former Super Eagles Midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju has recalled his time at Real-Madrid describing it as a ‘great experience’,
The former Racing Santander Midfielder spent three years as a Real Madrid reserve player after an impressive performance at the 1989 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia and was tipped for greatness at the Bernabeu.
However, ‘Headmaster’ as he is popularly called never had a first team experience and told Nigeria’s top Sports forum, Family United by Football (FUBF) on Saturday evening that his time at the Santiago Bernabeu was a positive, formative experience for his development.
” My time at Real Madrid was good for me, because it made me mature, grow and realise so many things.
” As a young man joining Real-Madrid from Shootings Stars, I felt I still had a lot to learn and was lucky because I experienced first class professionalism at the club. He told FUBF.
He added: ” There are only good memories as it was a dream come true even though I never got to play for the senior side.
” Back then, i wasn’t the only Nigerian at Real Madrid, we had Christopher Ohenhen and Dimeji Lawal, but they left for other teams just after a year, but I stayed and played for another three years.
” Realmadrid is a big team and you marvel at the professionalism there and the facilities on ground.
” I couldn’t make it to the first team at my third year, because they had to register only three foreigners and I understood the team had players like Hugo Sanchez, George Hagi, Prosinecki and that made it difficult for a young player like me to breakthrough to the first team. No doubt, it was a great privilege to play at a big club like Madrid. He concluded .
The Super Eagles legend went on to play for Racing De Santander, where he scored eleven Segunda division goals to help the club return to the Laliga and also played for Real Sociedad, UD Salamanca, all in Spain.
