Following the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, other multi-sport events such as the Central American Games, Santa Tecla 2021 (El Salvador) and the I Pan American Youth Games, Cali 2021 (Colombia), may have to reschedule. Although it is still too early to make decisions, El Salvador is proposing that the Central American Games take place in 2022, while for the Pan American Youth Games, there has been no statement of possible new dates.
CENTRAL AMERICAN SPORTS ORGANIZATION –ODERCA-
The President of the National Sports Institute of El Salvador, Yamil Bukele, reported that before the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, an in-depth analysis should be carried out in order to reschedule the Central American Games that are planned to take place in December 2021. Bukele suggested to ODERCA that these games, which will be based in the city of Santa Tecla, be held in June 2022.
CONMEBOL
The Council of the South American Football Confederation –CONMEBOL- made the following decisions with the aim to prioritize health at all times.
1. Carry out via videoconference its 72nd Ordinary Congress, which is scheduled for April 2nd2020.
2. Request to FIFA to postpone the South American qualifying rounds for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2020 for September 2020.
ARGENTINA
Hugo Orlando Gatti, one of the historical players (goalkeeper) of Argentine football, who is currently 75 years old, was admitted to a Hospital in Madrid, Spain, due to health problems related to COVID-19, as confirmed by Lucas, Gatti’s son. According to information published by Fox Sports Mexico, Lucas reported that his father is better than when he entered the hospital.
COLOMBIA
The Colombian Olympic Committee, through its President Baltazar Medina, confirmed that the date of the first edition of the Junior Pan American Games will be modified. The games that would take place in Cali, Colombia were scheduled between June and July 2021, months in which the Copa America, after the reschedule, will also be held in the city of Cali.
UNITED STATES
The International Cycling Union -UCI- reported that it is necessary to postpone the BMX World Championship that was to take place from May 26th to 31st 2020 at Rockstar Energy Bike Park, in Houston.
Regarding the qualification process for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the UCI recalls, as announced on March 15th that it requested the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to stop the qualification period retroactively from March 3rd given that to this date, no nation had been prevented from attending events due to the pandemic.
