Moses Simon’s Nantes wins French Cup to end 21 years trophy drought, gets automatic Europa League qualification

Nigerian international Moses Simon has won the 2021-22 French Cup with Nantes after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nice at the Stade de France on Saturday night.

Following a cagey first half, Nantes’ number 10, Ludovic Blas scored the only goal from the penalty spot two minutes into the second half after Nice midfielder Hicham Boudaoui handballed inside the box.

It is Nantes’s fourth French Cup victory and their first major trophy since winning Ligue 1 in 2001. It also means that they will play in the Europa League next season, their first European campaign in 20 years.

Simon played his part in his club’s triumph in his 73 minutes on the pitch. The winger made three key passes (most of the game) and delivered five successful crosses before being replaced by Ghanaian star Osman Bukari.

Nantes will play Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des Champions match, the French Super Cup at the start of next season.
