Moses Simon scored the decisive penalty in a shoutout to send FC Nantes to the final of the Coupe de France at the expense of AS Monaco on Wednesday night. The Canaries will face Nice in the final next month, their first French Cup final in 22 years.
The match got off to a lively start when Guillermo Maripan opened the scoring for Monaco after just twelve minutes. Nantes found a way back into the tie nine minutes later when Djibril Sidibé clumsily pokes the ball into his own net for an own goal.
Congolese international Samuel Moutoussamy put Nantes ahead in the 74th minute. Simon’s low cross was intercepted by an opposition player inside the box which set up Moutoussamy for a left-footed shot to the bottom corner.
Myron Boadu drew Monaco level two minutes later to set up a tense final 15 minutes at the Beaujoire Stadium. Neither side could come up with a winner and the game went straight to penalties after the final whistle of a 2-2 draw.
Wissam Ben Yedder and Aurelien Tchouameni were both guilty of missing from the spot for Monaco. That handed Simon the chance to win it for his side. The Nigerian made no mistake from the spot to give Nantes a 4-2 win on penalties.
Nantes will face Ligue 1 rivals Nice in the final at the Stade de France on the 8th of next month.
