Moses Simon has said it is a “big honor” for him to wear the Super Eagles captain’s armband in the historic win over São Tomé and Principe in the AFCON qualifiers game on Monday.
With Ahmed Musa starting on the bench and the absence of William Troost-Ekong Ekong through injury, Simon captained Nigeria for the first time in the 10-0 thrashing of the small island nation.
Simon assisted Victor Osimhen for Nigeria’s first goal in the 9th minute with a beautiful cross. Osimhen returned the favor by selflessly teeing up the Nantes star for Nigeria’s second in the 28th minute. Jose Peseiro’s charges went on to score eight more at the Adrar Stadium, which is now the biggest winning margin in the Super Eagles history.
Taking to Instagram, Simon revealed his pride in captaining the national team on a historic day. He wrote:
“Big honor for me to wear the captain armband of the Super Eagles of Nigeria. A historic win for the team as well. God be all the glory.”
Simon made his Eagles debut in a friendly game against Uganda in March 2015. The 26-year-old has scored 7 goals in 53 total international appearances.
Nigeria leads Group A of the qualifications after two games, with six points. The Super Eagles continue their campaign against Guinea-Bissau in September.
