Confederation of African Football(CAF) Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced an increase in prize money for the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nigeria, keeping his promise of raising African women’s football to the same standard as their counterparts in other continents.
Developing women’s football in Africa has been at the top of the CAF President and the CAF Executive Committee for the next couple of years.
The figures that were announced on Saturday(today) saw a 150% increase in monetary prize that will be awarded to teams at the 12th edition of the biennial football showpiece.
The total prize money of the competition has been increased from $975,000 to $2.4 million– an increase of almost $1.5 million, with the eventual of this year’s tournament earning $500,000 instead of the previous $200,000, the runners up will take home $300,000 as opposed to $175,000 awarded in past editions.
Meanwhile, the semi-finalists will get $225,000 each – increased from $125,000, seeing an increase of $100,000.
The tournament will begin today with the hosts Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses taking on their Burkina Faso counterparts in the opening game of the tournament at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium and run till 23rd of July, 2022.
