NPFL ‘super six’ – Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Super Six will be played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan according to reports with the Lagos pitch picked over Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
The Super Six tournament will produce the 2023 champions and Confederation African representatives for next season.
Super Six is a competition where top three NPFL clubs from group A and group B will clash to determine the eventual winner of the 2022/23 NPFL season.
Recall that the IMC’s Head of Operations, Davidson Owumi had disclosed that Lagos and Abuja have been pencilled down as provisional venues.
“We are keeping the issue of venue very close to our chest. We will look at several factors before announcing it. First and foremost, we would want to be fair to the teams in terms of neutrality. We have to consider marketing, TV friendly nature of the venue and all that,” Owumi said.
In a statement revealed to BSNSports by the Chairman of Interim Management Committee, Gbenga Elegbeleye, the Nigeria Professional Football League Super Six will hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.
Elegbeleye in a chat with Niyi Busari said a lot of factors was put into consideration before making the final decision on the venue for the super six. He added that for fairness the venue must not be home to any team that will be participating in the tournament.
“Yes, the Super 6 will hold in Lagos,” he wrote in the chat.
The Abridged season led to the idea of the Super Six as the top 3 teams from group A and B compete for the 3 continental slot as well as the eventually winner of the 2023 league season.
As it stands after 13 games, Bendel Insurance, Akwa United and Enyimba occupies the top three in group A while Lobi Stars, Rivers United and Niger Tornadoes are top three clubs in group B.
As widely known, the top three teams in the NPFL Group A and B are expected to converge in Lagos for the competition as the tournament will be run in a league format with the team with the highest points going home with the trophy.
Overall winners and second placed team will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League next year while the third placed team will compete in the CAF Confederations Cup.
