The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development through the Minister, Mr. Sunday Dare, has provided funds for injured D’Tigress player, Nkem Akaraiwe’s treatment.
The $15,000 intervention by the Ministry is in addition to the $10,000 earlier received from Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa which was equally facilitated by the Minister.
The NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida thanking the Minister, said the gesture is timely and would boost athletes confidence in the fact that the Federal Government is responsive to the plight of its athletes. He added that the gesture would spur athletes to strive for glory while representing the country
“We cannot thank the Minister enough for coming through for one of our top basketball players who got injured on national duty. We are really grateful and elated that finally Nkem can go for the surgery, recover on time and get back to the court.”
The First Bank Women Basketball Club ‘s player is expected to proceed for surgery in Dubai with enough funds raised.
Nkem Akaraiwe was a member of the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup team who got to the quarter finals of the competition. She sustained an injury to her Anterior Cruciate Ligament while representing the country earlier this year at the Beach Games in Cape Verde and had found it difficult raising funds for the needed surgery until the Minister intervened.
