NPFL (Nigeria Professional Football League) clubs will have to fork out a whopping sum of N2.5m for COVID-19 tests for each game as prepare to finding a way to complete the 2019/2020 season disrupted by the virus outbreak, as the tests will be crucial in ensuring the football season resumption amidst concerns over players’ safety following Minister for youth and sports development, Sunday Dare mandating the test compulsory.
The Minister revealed in a recent interview that there will be no compromise on some specific issues when it comes to the health code, with no room for compromise.
“Inasmuch as we want it, I can bodly tell you that there will be no audience participation, contents will have to be acessed through radio, television and other means as tests will be conducted on the players and the coaches as the case may be and I don’t see us having multiple venues. We might think of centres to have all the other games”, he further explained.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, a COVID-19 test costs approximately N50,000.
Following this information, Each NPFL team is expected to administer up to 50 tests (40 players and 10 officials) before every game, meaning each club will pay N2.5m for the tests.
