Super Eagles’ captain, John Mikel Obi is bound to become the third Nigerian player to star for Fernebahce of Turkey, following interest in the midfielder by the Istanbul-based club.
Sports247.ng gathered that Mikel is high on the cards of January purchases for Fernebahce, who first had former Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha and ace central defender, Uche Okechukwu on their cards before recently also paying the wages of Emmanuel Emenike.
The next Nigerian to follow suit is now billed to be 31-year-old Mikel, who on Friday announced his decision to leave Tianjin Teda of China.
Transfer reports are now swirling round Mikel, so soon after ending his pact with the Chinese Super League outfit, with which he spent two years after arriving from Chelsea of England.
Mikel, who first played for Lyn Oslo of Norway, refused to travel with Teda for their pre-season training camp in Spain and announced his departure from the team all together.
Before leaving, Mikel made 31 appearances for the CSL club, with three goals and same number of assists to his name, but his last season was riddled with injuries and fitness issues.
Nonetheless, Fenerbache have now shown strong interest in Mikel, as the aim to bolster their midfield during this winter transfer window.
They can count on a high level of experience form Mikel, who has been capped 85 times by Nigeria and has six goals to his name in the green-and-white.
Mikel also hopes to regain full fitness in the remaining part of the season ahead of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, as he has not featured for the Eagles since their last group game at the 2018 World Cup.
