Accompanied by her husband, Mr. Colin Udoh, and their team, Mercy organized a scouting camp aimed at identifying talented female players for scholarship opportunities in U.S. collegiate programs. Mercy, the first Nigerian to benefit from a similar scholarship program in the U.S. and the first African woman to play professional football outside the continent, is committed to creating pathways for young girls to achieve success.

The event, titled “Play 2 Learn,” had its first session in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from January 4–5, 2025. The Uyo leg of the program took place at the Uyo Township Stadium on January 8, 2025, with about 40 girls aged 15-20 participating.

Sharing her motivation, Mercy said, “My late mother was my biggest supporter during tough times in my football career. I want to help young girls improve their lives through education and the sport they love.” She emphasized the importance of combining academic excellence with strong football skills to secure scholarship opportunities.

During interactive sessions, Mercy addressed questions about life and education in structured societies, explaining the differences between D1, D2, and D3 college scholarships for African students. She encouraged the girls to work on their academics and athletic skills ahead of next summer’s scholarship evaluations.

A special guest, Rt. Hon. Kufre Edidem, Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, commended Mercy for her initiative. He reflected on her contributions to Nigerian football and urged participants to seize the opportunity. “Mercy’s decision to support young girls, especially in Akwa Ibom State, aligns with our governor’s Arise Agenda for sports and infrastructure development,” he said.

Mr. Colin Udoh expressed gratitude to the Deputy Speaker and thanked Mr. Paul Bassey for facilitating the use of the Uyo Township Stadium and other resources for the “Play 2 Learn” program.
