Nigeria’s start to the 2022 All Africa Senior Athletics Championship in Mauritius today was sort of fixed feelings as one of the top athletes failed to qualify for the finals of the 100 meters.
There were 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres events today which the Nigerian athletes partake in.
Seye Ogunlewe could only finish in 4th position in his semi final of the men’s 100 metres after running 10.24 seconds to finish third in the quarter finals.
Raymond Ekevwo showed his qualities both in the quarter finals and semi finals to seal a slot in the finals of the men’s 100 metres events.
Raymond finished second in a time of 10.11 secs in the quarter finals and later ran 10.15 secs to finish third in the semi finals. He will the only Nigerian in the finals of the men’s 100 meters event.
In the women’s event, Tima Godbless made record of a personal best in 11.25 secs to qualify for the finals of the women’s 100 meters.
Nigeria will have two other athletes fighting for a slot in the finals of the women’s 100 metres as Praise Ofoku in 11.80 secs won her heat and Balikis Yakubu ran 11.76 secs to finish second in her heat.
The good fortunes continued for Nigeria as the three representatives – Samson Nathaniel, Sikiru Adeyemi and Johnson Nnanani in the 400m event qualified for the semi finals of the event.
In the women’s 400m, National Champion Patience Okon-George was sublime all through as she finished 2nd fastest overall across all heats and returned a time of 52.19s to win Heat 5 while Former 200m National Champion, Praise Idamadudu won Heat 4 in 54.61s while the third Nigerian listed for the event, Ella Onojuvwevwo did not race.
