Team Nigeria rounded off their performance in the just concluded African Senior Athletics Championship hosted by Mauritius with a number of medals on the last day.
First on the plate was Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the men’s shotput. He rounded off with Nigeria’s fifth gold medal at the championship with a season best and championship record of 21.20m and also breaking his previous record of 21.08m set in Asaba.
This was Ebuka’s 3rd gold medal in.the championship and is yet to be beaten in the men’s shot put since debut in 2017. However, the other Nigerian Dotun Ogundeji finished 4th with 19.11m.
In high jump, former reality tv star, Mike Edwards increased Team Nigeria’s medals after winning a Silver medal in the men’s High Jump. Edwards, who was making his debut for Team Nigeria, jumped a distance of 2.15m to win his first ever medal in his career.
On the track, Team Nigeria was not done either. In the 4x400m relays, Team Nigeria got bronze in both men’s and women’s events. In the women’s event, the quartet of Deborah Oke, Queen Usunobun, Ella and Patience Okon George claimed their medal, while Johnson Nnamani, Chidi Okezie, Adeyemi Sikiru and Emmanuel Ojeli rounded off the day with another bronze medal in the men’s category.
In the men’s 200m final, Chidi Okezie narrowly missed out on a medal in 4th with 21.02s although he was part of the 4x400m relay that later won bronze.
Team Nigeria could not better South Africa (10 gold medals) and Kenya (9 gold medals) who finished first and second respectively just like they did in Asaba, 2018.
Team Nigeria who was not with full strength of athletes as some athletes including Ese Brume missed the championship had to settle for third position with 5 gold medals and 11 medals in total at the African championships
