Matildas Coach Tony Gustavsson Remains Confident Despite Missing Star Players Ahead of Nigeria Clash

Ahead of their clash against Nigeria at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday, Matildas Coach Tony Gustavsson expressed his belief in the attacking quality of his team, despite being without key players Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler.

Gustavsson addressed the recent closed training incidents that affected his attacking options, with Fowler and defender Aivi Luik sustaining mild concussions in separate occurrences.

Refusing to disclose details about the incidents, Gustavsson emphasized that it was a normal training session and attributed the concussions to unfortunate bad luck.

With only Caitlin Foord as the recognized striker available against Nigeria, Gustavsson defended his decision to keep Kyah Simon in the squad, aiming to utilize her as an impact substitute later in the tournament.

In light of the absences, playmaker Emily van Egmond is a potential replacement for Fowler, while Tameka Yallop and Alex Chidiac offer other options.

Despite the changes, Gustavsson emphasized the team’s adaptability and maintaining their identity.

Football Australia confirmed that Fowler and Luik have fully recovered and are following return-to-play protocols.

The concussion protocols require players to sit out for at least six days after a head knock.

This opens the possibility for both players to feature in the final group game against Canada on July 31, pending clearance.

As the only team in Group B with three points from their opening game, Australia can secure progression to the knockout stages with a victory against Nigeria, which currently has one point.

A draw between Canada and Ireland would further enhance Australia’s chances of finishing at the top of the group.
