The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has made a strategic move in the realm of youth football, appointing Manu Garba as the Head Coach of the Under-17 team, Golden Eaglets.
The announcement, made on Friday, signals a significant shift in the direction of the team’s fortunes.

Garba, a former Nigeria international and a seasoned tactician, immediately assumes his role at the helm, charged with the responsibility of steering the Eaglets through the upcoming challenges, notably the WAFU B U17 Championship slated to kick off next month in Ghana.
The decision to bring Garba back into the fold comes as no surprise, given his illustrious track record.
Notably, he led the Golden Eaglets to a historic triumph in the FIFA U17 World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates back in 2013.
This victory marked Nigeria’s fourth conquest at the prestigious youth level, solidifying the nation’s standing as a powerhouse in youth football.
The 2013 squad, masterminded by Garba, boasted talents that have since risen to prominence on the global stage.
Among them are current Super Eagles luminaries Kelechi Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi, whose journey to stardom commenced under Garba’s tutelage.
However, Garba’s return also carries the weight of unfinished business. Despite their global success, the Eaglets fell short in continental competition, finishing as runners-up in the African U17 Championship held in Morocco, succumbing to a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Cote d’Ivoire.
Nevertheless, they rallied back on the world stage, clinching Nigeria’s fourth U17 World Cup title.
Garba’s reappointment marks a pivotal moment for the Golden Eaglets, as they seek to reclaim their dominance in African and global youth football.
With a renewed sense of purpose and Garba’s tactical acumen guiding them, the Eaglets are poised to embark on a journey of resurgence, aiming to surpass their quarter-final exit in the last Africa U-17 Cup of Nations and reclaim their status as continental champions.
