Malachi Ohawume smashed home an unstoppable shot to draw Rivers United level as the “Pride of Rivers” mounted a second-half comeback to secure a 2-1 win over fellow NPFL side MFM FC on Sunday in Ijebu Ode booking a semi-final place against Shooting Stars of Ibadan.
Rivers United went a goal down just before the break as Kamon Akani brilliantly displaced two defenders to slot home the game’s opener.
Going a goal down and being watched by members of the management team led by its General Manager Chief (Dr) Okey Kpalukwu appeared to fire Rivers United into life, as moments after the break, Malachi Ohawume scored what would enter into the goal of the tournament contest race.
Ohawume smashed home the ball mid-air after receiving a pass from defence marshal Fabian Nworie to the admiration of onlookers.
Fortune Omoniwari completed the come back as he finished off in style late on to round up an impressive display by Stanley Eguma’s tutored side.
With this victory, Rivers United advanced into the semi-final where they will confront Shooting Stars who were 2-1 victor over Bendel Insurance.
