Plateau United of Jos’ new coach, Abdul Maikaba has declared that the Tin City side can win next season’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title again, just as they did in 2017.
Though the Jos-based side fell short of replicating the feat under the same coach, Kenneth Boboye, in the past season, Maikaba believes he can do better next term.
Maikaba, who handled Akwa United of Uyo for the past two seasons, stated as much during his official unveiling in the Plateau State capital, as he declared that his main target is to win the 2019 league title with his new club.
After signing a two-year contract with the 2017 champions, Maikaba commended the club’s management for putting trust in him for the job Maikaba commended management of the team, who found him suitable for the job, and promised to do his best to justify the confidence in him.
Maikaba, who led Akwa to win the Federation Cup win in 2017, had previously helped Wikki Tourist of Bauchi finish in the top four during a three-year stay with them.
He now replaces Boboye, who quit Plateau United last week after the expiration of his contract, in a proviso that accords him the option of a third year deal dependent on performance.
Maikaba stated: “The first challenge is to retain that trophy. The second challenge is to make sure we win the other trophy, which is the Aiteo Cup.
“It has been a while a Nigerian club has won the double, even with the inconclusive arrangement of our league of last season (but) we are here to do the double.”
