Heerenveen raced to a 3:0 half-time lead through strikes from Benjamin Nygren, Jan Paul van Hecke and Henk Veerman.
Henk Veerman scored again seven minutes into the second half to make matters worse for the home side. Sparta got a late consolation goal from the penalty spot after Lennart Thy converted his kick.
The loose extends Sparta Rotterdam’s winless run to eight games in all competitions this season, which leaves them in the bottom three of the league table and out of cup competition.
