Madubuike Tochukwu, aka ‘Tochi’ one of the standout players at the Amazons Tennis Tournament 2025, shared her passion for the sport and revealed her biggest inspiration during an interview.
Speaking with Sports247 at the event, Tochukwu explained what drew her to tennis. “Oh, what inspired me to play tennis? First, I would say the outfits. Whenever I escort my friends to the court, I see them on white and white. It’s so beautiful. And I actually get to know that it’s a clean sport, you know? And also, Serena Williams.”

When asked to name the woman who inspires her the most, Tochukwu didn’t hesitate. “Oh my god, it’s Coco Gauff! Coco Gauff from the USA! Okay, I love her because she’s black, and you know she uses her double fist backhand so well, like it’s so beautiful, and I like her because she doesn’t give up. I just love her. She’s my tennis idol.”
To encourage more women and girls to take up tennis and other sports, she suggested, “Okay, so on my own end, I’ll say awareness. I don’t think most ladies are aware of these sports. Some of them see it as difficult, and sometimes it could also be financially challenging. So I feel like they can just have free sessions, free coaching, and even provide some materials and equipment for women to train. I feel like it would be a lot better.”
Reflecting on the challenges she faces, Tochukwu added, “The most challenging part of tennis for me is love-love. When I hear love-love, and it’s a tournament, I just begin to get so tense and nervous. But I think on my own, I’ve been able to overcome it by talking to myself, making myself know that I can do better, and I can always get whatever I want.”
For International Women’s Day, her message to young girls and women is clear: “You know what, you guys, just have fun. Like it’s beautiful. You don’t have to do aerobics or running all the time. Whether you play a little or a lot, tennis is fun and you can still sweat it out and network. If you’re not playing tennis, you’re missing out. Trust me.”
When asked if she could switch lives with any tennis player for a day, she smiled and replied, “Coco Gauff!” Her admiration for Coco is evident as she praises her skill, humility, and overall cool demeanor.
Tochukwu’s positive attitude and determination underscore her belief that tennis can be a source of joy and empowerment for women—a message she hopes will inspire many more to pick up a racket and join the game.
