Fatodu stated that the primary purpose of the screening process is to ensure that only deserving athletes within the specified age bracket represent Lagos. “Our selection process is a demonstration of excellence that we are always leading in Nigeria,” he said.

“We are very sure that our young athletes are not just going to come out with flying colors in Oshogbo but will win gold for Lagos.”

In preparation for the Zonal Eliminations, the training of Lagos athletes has been intensified. Trials were conducted as the athletes rounded off their opening camp, ready to showcase their skills at the qualifiers in Oshogbo, which will take place from August 29th to September 1st, 2024.

The athletes will compete in nine sports, including Football, Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Rugby, Abula, Cricket, and Hockey.

The South Western region’s contest for qualification includes six states—Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, and Ondo. Lagos will field a contingent of 188 athletes, both male and female, vying for nine slots to represent the region at the National Games in Asaba.

With a rigorous selection process and an intensive training regimen, Lagos State aims not just to compete but to dominate the Zonal Eliminations and proceed to the National Youth Games in Asaba with the goal of securing gold.

As the competition kicks off at the Oshogbo township stadium, all eyes will be on the Lagos athletes to see if they can fulfill their promise of excellence.
