Latest FIFA Ranking: Nigeria 44th Globally, 5th in Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria conclude the year 2024 ranked 44th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, holding steady from their position in November.

This marks a significant dip compared to their 28th-place standing at the beginning of the year. Within Africa, Nigeria remains the fifth-best footballing nation, trailing Morocco (14th globally), Senegal (17th), Egypt (33rd), and Algeria (37th).

Nigeria’s position reflects the team’s inconsistent performances throughout the year. The Super Eagles played 15 matches, securing nine wins, four draws, and five losses.

While they showed moments of brilliance, particularly in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, their struggles in World Cup qualification and some friendly matches led to a drop in their ranking points.

Morocco, Africa’s highest-ranked team and 14th globally, continues to dominate the continent, showcasing exceptional consistency in global and continental competitions.

Senegal, another powerhouse, remains firmly in second place within CAF, reflecting their strong performances in international tournaments. Egypt and Algeria, ranked third and fourth in Africa respectively, also demonstrated commendable results throughout the year.

For Nigeria, 2024 was a year of mixed outcomes. The Super Eagles showed potential with their talented squad but lacked the consistency required to maintain a higher position.

The team will look to regain its footing in 2025, with upcoming tournaments providing opportunities to climb back up the rankings.

The FIFA World Rankings also highlight the competitive nature of African football, with Côte d’Ivoire (46th globally) and Cameroon (49th globally) not far behind Nigeria.

As these nations continue to develop their football programs, the battle for supremacy in African football is expected to intensify.

The Super Eagles’ coaching team, led by a newly appointed head coach, faces the challenge of turning these rankings around in the new year.

Fans and stakeholders hope for better preparation and strategic play that will see Nigeria reclaim its spot among the top-ranked teams in the world.

With a blend of experienced players and rising stars, there is optimism that the Super Eagles can soar higher in the coming year.
