Poised on the need to keep the legacy and dream of late Justice Nasiru Ajanah towards sports development and talent discovery alive, the chairperson of Kogi state Athletic Federation, Mrs. Fatimat Yusuf has sponsored a Secondary School Track and Field championship.
Speaking to sportswriters via phone call at the end of the championship, Fatimat disclosed that the initiative was spurred out of a desire to honor a man who had over the years contributed so much to the development of sports in the state.
According to her, Late JNA was a good man in which students at their youthful age needs to grow up with the knowledge and need to embrace sport development, the legacies, and benchmark the Late Justice Ajanah left behind.
The championship she added was meant not only to honor the late JNA but to encourage well to do individuals in the state on the need to help discover talents and develop the sports sector in the state.
Earlier in his speech, the chairman of the Late JNA basketball competition, Hon. Justice Siyaka Momohjimoh Usman who lauded the efforts of Mrs. Fatimat for sponsoring the memorial event stressed that modalities are in place to ensure that the sports development policy of Justice Ajanah would be kept alive.
He further disclosed that sport which is a unifying factor and a major source of employment creation should be encouraged by the government and well to do individuals.
In his opening remarks, the state Director of Sports, Mr. Sunday Daku promised to follow up and incorporate talents discovered during the championship into the hands of the state athletic federation.
At the end of the Track and Field championship, Muslim community Secondary School emerged the overall winner with 5 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze medals, Government Science Secondary School, came second with 3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medals, Government Day Secondary School, came close in the third position with 2 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
In other results, Harmony secondary school came fourth, fifth was Al Hazar secondary school, sixth, Bishop Deliese College, the seventh place went to Holy Trinity while the Crowder memorial College was not represented at all.
The championship which took place at the state township stadium was filed with spectators from far and near, which they were thrilled and entertained by the skills displayed by the young lads.
