The headline and the body of the story which was awaiting release upon the blast of the referee’s whistle had to undergo a total change as a 95th-minute winner for Imo Strikers against Delta Babes reminded everyone of the age-long saying that “it is never over until it is over” as the script had to be re-written all over again.
Imo Strikers, playing like their lives depended on it, kept their opponents on the defensive for much of the first half and deservedly went ahead with Harmony Achifula’s strike from the edge of the box which caught the Delta Babes goalkeeper napping mid-way into the half.
When it looked like the half was going to end with Imo Strikers firmly in the lead, a howler by their goalkeeper allowed Ambrose Uchechukwu the luxury of being on the score sheet for Delta Babes as her harmless free-kick sailed into the net pro bono publico, leaving Imo Strikers supporters bemused and disappointed as the half came to a close.
The 2nd half witnessed a more confident Delta side dictating the pace of the game but for poor marksmanship, the game could have been all over even before the hour mark.
Imo Strikers would eventually have the last laugh as a deflected shot at the last minute by Ugu Rita sailed into her own net for an own goal and the referee blew off the game shortly after with Imo Strikers recording their first win after two previous losses.
Delta Babes remain on one point after 3 matches.
