Lagos is set to make history as it hosts the first-ever Yucateco World Boxing Council (WBC) Amateur Boxing Championship. Organized by Yucateco Boxing Promotions in collaboration with Africa’s leading boxing organization, the tournament will take place from February 6th to 8th at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Boxers from eight nations—Kenya, Uganda, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Cameroon, and Nigeria—will compete in the landmark event.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, stated: “I am thrilled that my promotion has achieved this milestone.
Hosting the first-ever WBC amateur tournament in Africa, especially in Nigeria, is a dream come true. We are bringing the world to Lagos, and this fills me with immense joy.”
The championship has garnered international attention, with WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán and Africa Boxing Union (ABU) President Houcine Houichi confirming their attendance.
In addition to securing spots at the inaugural WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup later this year, the Most Valuable Boxers in each weight category will receive the coveted WBC Amateur title belt—an unprecedented honor in African amateur boxing.
“This tournament offers an extraordinary opportunity for the boxers, combining global recognition with the chance to claim the prestigious WBC Amateur title belt,” Imadu added.
