When some football clubs are looking forward to win their first title in the early new year, 36 Lion Football Club on Tuesday morning won their first title to send warning signals to their rivals.
36 Lion defeated Spartan Football Club of Agege 4-3 on penalties after one goal apiece at the regulation time in the Supremacy Cup final held early this morning at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.
Olawunmi Lateef first scored the opening goal in the 33 minutes for 36 Lion to take an early lead.
Spartan who were determined to shock their opponents in the tournament were better in the second as their effort was rewarded when Ayo Adele cancelled the goal deficit for his team to take the game to penalty shootout.
Reacting to the victory, 36 Lion coach,Akinrele Francis expressed delight that his team won their first victory in the new year noted that they were lucky to have won the game through penalties.
“We were better in the first half but our second half was not too good but i thank God that it ended in our favour.We were lucky in the penalties and i congratulate my boys for job well done,”he said.
Spartan coach, Abubakar Musa said he was disappointed over the defeat but also commended his boys for their doggedness and fighting spirits exhibited throughout the encounter.
Meanwhile Broad City also defeated Dino 2-1 to win the third place position.
During the award presentation, Mohammed Bangura from 36 Lion selected as most valuable player of the competition,while Alex John of winning team won the youngest player of the tournament.
