Jummy Ogunnowo, Chairman of the Lagos State Taekwondo Association, has revealed
plans to collaborate with the Korea Cultural Centre (KCC) to introduce taekwondo training in schools.
The objective is to enhance the grassroots level of taekwondo and discover young
talents at an early stage.
Ogunnowo expressed admiration for the Executive Self Defense and Martial Arts Academy, which recently organized a taekwondo grading exercise at the Pitch Court in Lekki Phase One. He commended the academy for its efforts in training and producing high-quality taekwondo athletes for the country. He emphasized the importance of supporting and empowering taekwondo academies in Lagos State to effectively nurture potential stars.
The Chairman stated that the Lagos State Association is pleased with the increasing
participation in taekwondo, evident from the grading of athletes for black belts and other belt categories. He emphasized the Association’s commitment to visiting taekwondo academies across the state, offering encouragement and support in various capacities. Furthermore, the Association intends to collaborate with other organizations to promote the sport and its benefits.
By partnering with the Korea Cultural Centre, the Lagos State Taekwondo Association aims to tap into the expertise and heritage of Korean taekwondo, a martial art that originated in Korea and has gained global recognition.
Introducing taekwondo training in schools would provide young students with the opportunity to learn discipline, self-defense skills, and engage in physical activity. It would also create a pathway for identifying and nurturing talented individuals who could represent the state and the country in national and international taekwondo competitions.
The initiative to expand taekwondo at the grassroots level aligns with the Association’s vision to develop and promote the sport across Lagos State. By investing in training programs, fostering partnerships, and providing support to academies, the aim is to create a thriving taekwondo community that can produce world-class athletes while instilling important values in the younger generation.
