On Saturday, August 10th, 2024, the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, witnessed a landmark event in Nigerian football history.
The Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), led by Chairman Hajji Gafar Liameed, in collaboration with the State’s Female Football Development Committee, successfully organized a one-day football development and mentoring program for over 400 young boys and girls.

The day began early, with the first session dedicated to the boys, who trained from 7 am to 10 am. Under the guidance of NFF Technical Director Austin Eguavoen and FIFA/NFF Youth Scheme Director Nasiru Jibril, the boys participated in drills and practical skill acquisition sessions.
The highlight of the day, however, was the second session titled “It’s Time For Girls,” which targeted girls aged 7 to 15.
Over 20 coaches from various football councils across the state took the eager participants through physical drills, ball work, and 5-a-side games.
Clad in jerseys provided by event sponsors, the girls impressed observers with their enthusiasm and talent. Some were even scouted for further development through the Eko Football Initiative.
Beyond the physical training, the girls were mentored by several former female footballers, stakeholders, and business leaders who offered life-changing advice on sports education, financial literacy, and personal development. In a heartwarming gesture, elite female referee Yemisi Akintoye promised to cover the registration fees for a young girl aspiring to become a referee.
Chairman Hajji Gafar Liameed expressed his joy at the turnout and reiterated the importance of nurturing the girl-child. “The girl-child is special and must be treated with love and care at all times,” he emphasized, promising continued support for female football in Lagos.
Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, praised the event, calling it “historic, timely, and in sync with the developmental programs of Lagos State.”
The event also saw the participation of notable figures in the football community and was made possible by sponsors like Lotus Bank, Tingo, TopPro Sports Management, and others.
