The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, has commended the National Institute for Sports (NIS) for its immense contributions to sports development in Nigeria as the institution marked its 50th anniversary and 9th convocation at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, which saw over 900 graduates receive certificates in 12 sports disciplines, Fatodu acknowledged the pivotal role of the NIS in producing skilled professionals who drive the growth of sports at various levels.
“For five decades, the NIS has played a crucial role in shaping the landscape of sports in Nigeria. This milestone is a testament to the dedication of its founders and the institution’s continued commitment to excellence in sports education,” Fatodu stated.
He also reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to partnering with sports institutions to develop young talents and enhance the quality of coaching, fitness training, and sports management.
The event was attended by Mobolaji Ogunlende, Honorable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, alongside top dignitaries, including Professor Olawale Moronkola, the NIS DG, who emphasized the importance of recognizing the institute’s founding fathers and projecting its future impact.
Lagos Sports Commission’s Support for Sports Growth
Fatodu reiterated that Lagos State remains a strong pillar for sports development in Nigeria and will continue to support initiatives that promote excellence in sports education, coaching, and administration.
As part of the celebrations, the NIS also inducted top sports personalities into its Hall of Fame, recognizing individuals like Peter Rufai, Chioma Ajunwa, Augustine Eguavoen, and Late Sunday Bada for their remarkable contributions to Nigerian sports.
The Lagos Sports DG’s presence at the event further highlighted the state’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the sporting ecosystem, ensuring that institutions like the NIS thrive in their mission to train, mentor, and develop the next generation of sports professionals.
