The meeting between the Lagos State Sports Commission, led by Director General Oluwatoyin Gafar, and China’s Consul General to Nigeria, Yan Yuqing, focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in sports development.
During the meeting, Ms. Yan Yuqing emphasized China’s commitment to supporting Lagos State in various sports, particularly where China has a competitive edge, such as table tennis and swimming.

She highlighted that China would offer full sponsorship opportunities for Lagos State athletes and coaches, aiming to enhance their skills and capabilities through exposure to advanced training and facilities in China.
This collaboration is part of broader efforts to deepen the China-Nigeria strategic partnership, which has seen significant developments over the past decades.
Key projects like the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line, constructed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, and the efficient operation of the Lagos-Ibadan Railway underscore China’s contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure development.
The Consul General also noted the role of Chinese enterprises in local economic growth and the cultural exchanges facilitated by Confucius Institutes.
