And for any society to work and operate functionally, we are meant to have a lot of healthy minds. So for the government to put this foot forward, to say we are going to encourage every citizen to be fit, I think is one of the most selfless things that the government has done.”
He also expressed his satisfaction and motivation for being part of the programme, saying that he was here to collaborate with the government to make it bigger, better, and more sustainable. He said, “It makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I’m in the right place. It makes me feel like I’m doing the right thing, and it makes me feel like I’m not alone.
Because one thing is you wanting to do the right thing, another thing is you knowing that you’re getting all the support that you need to be able to do the right thing. So, I mean, that just explains why I’m here, because I’m here to also collaborate with the government to make it bigger, to make it better, to make it more sustainable. It should be something that will not only be done for a month or two or a year, it should be something that becomes a part and parcel of every Lagosian.”
He also shared his vision of making the Lagos Keep Fit Initiatives a consciousness in the mind of every Lagosian, regardless of their location. He said, “I mean, that’s what we want, right? We don’t only want keep fit Lagos initiatives to be an activity at the Onikan stadium. We want it to be a consciousness in the mind of every Legosian, knowing that on a certain Saturday in every month, we need to keep fit. So whether you’re in Onikan, whether you’re in Ajah, anywhere you are in Lagos, you make a conscious effort to be fit. Of course, when it rises, this stadium will not house everybody. But imagine having every stadium in Lagos packed full because it’s in the consciousness of everybody. That is where we’re heading to.”
The Lagos Keep Fit Initiatives is a collaboration between the Lagos State Sports Commission and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports. The programme is open to all and free of charge. The next edition is scheduled for March 18, 2024 at the same venue.
