In a recent visit to the Lagos State Sports Commission, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, commended Director-General Lekan Fatodu for his impressive contributions to sports development in Lagos.
Highlighting Fatodu’s vision and initiatives, Omotosho praised the DG’s role in fostering a dynamic sports environment that aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which emphasizes sports as a key avenue for social impact and economic growth.
Since his appointment, Fatodu has spearheaded several groundbreaking programs, including partnerships with international athletes who donated sports equipment for grassroots initiatives. His efforts are part of a broader strategy to make sports accessible and to promote Lagos as a leading sports hub in Nigeria. “Through Lekan Fatodu’s leadership, sports in Lagos are no longer just about recreation but are evolving into powerful tools for youth development, social inclusion, and even economic prosperity,” Omotosho noted.
One of Fatodu’s recent projects involved hiring 60 seasoned coaches to bolster grassroots sports across the state. This initiative aims to build an enduring foundation for Lagos’s youth by providing them with quality mentorship and training, which, Fatodu hopes, will lead to notable achievements at national and international competitions. As he put it, the commission aims to “create an environment that supports continuous growth and innovation in sports” by recognizing coaches with performance-based bonuses and offering athletes exposure to advanced training and sports science.
Omotosho’s visit underscores the administration’s commitment to making sports a key component of social and economic development in Lagos. With Fatodu at the helm, the Sports Commission has charted an ambitious path that includes building infrastructure, increasing community involvement, and ensuring that young Lagosians have access to the resources and platforms they need to excel in sports.
