Former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha’, has informed sports247.ng reasons why he called it quit early from active football.
Okocha who made the hard decision to hang up his boots in 2008 at age 34 said it was due to lack of playing time and he felt terribly unsatisfied being a bench warmer with his skills.
Tunisia ’94 Nation’s cup winner also made mention of persistent injury but lack of playing time overshadowed other reasons.
“I must confess that [not getting a lot of playing time] was one of the main reasons why I retired from playing at a very young age,” Okocha told media men at a press conference organised by Star Times.
“I believe that it is not worth it to train from Monday to Friday just to have 20 minutes on the pitch or sit on the bench on Saturday. I am very competitive.”
The ace Midfielder who was part of Atlanta ’96 Gold winners last represented Nigeria in 2006 and made 75 appearances for the Eagles and netted 14 goals
