Micheal Ohanu’s seventh-minute goal was the difference between Sunshine Stars and Kwara United on matchday 29 of the NPFL at the Kwara State Stadium.
Ohanu slotted home early in the game for the home side to help them resist the resurging fight of the Owena Whales and also breaking the dock of their winless run at home against the Akure side
In search of a response to the early goal, Sadeeq Yusuf conjured a low drive from a distance but didn’t pose enough threat to Dele Aiyenugba in goal for Kwara United.
At the other end, Saliu Sulaiman was on alert, stopping Ohanu and another Kwara United threat to keep Sunshine Stars in the game at the break.
Coach Deji Ayeni rang few changes in the team at halftime, bringing on Waheed Adebayo, Nasiru Akindoyin, Emmanuel James, and Kolade Adenini at intervals.
The team kept up its energy against their hosts and could have drawn level in the 59′ but Yusuf could not stir his header home from goalmouth, while Suleiman made no mistake between the sticks to keep the scoreline slim.
The Harmony Boys survived a late onslaught from the visitors and in the end, Ohanu’s early goal proved decisive while Sunshine Stars return home to continue the resurgence against Wikki on matchday 30.
AYENI’S POST-MATCH QUOTES🎙
“We started low and the team is improving on a daily basis and I believe before the end of the season we will get our away points that will make us escape relegation.
“It’s an excellent performance from the boys, far away from what we had against Enugu Rangers. You can see there is an improvement; the team is a bit compact and they play to instructions and very discipline, so I take a lot of positive from the match.”
“We are going to win against Wikki Tourists, I have made the boys understand the need to turn our home to the fortress; we can’t drop any point at home again. The winning mentality is back to the team, so we are going to get our three points.”
