Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has thanked SD Ponferradina for a warm reception and is ready to begin the next phase of his career with the Spanish Segunda Division club.
Nwakali signed with Ponferradina as a free agent in July, three months after his contract with Huesca was unlawfully terminated following a dispute between club and player.
Nwakali is eager to put the ordeal behind him and make a fresh start at Ponferradina. Speaking at his presentation, the 24-year-old said:
“I’m happy to join the team. I have to say a very big thank you to the president and to the club. Since I came in, everyone has been very welcoming. From the club officials to the back room staffs and the players.
“This is a new phase in my career. I’m here to improve myself both as a person and as a player. And I’m happy to be here. The most important thing is for me to improve and do better than I’ve done in the past.”
Nwakali is ready to play anywhere across midfield for Ponferradina as long as it helps the team to achieve their goal. The former Arsenal man added:
“I can play in any position in the middle of the pitch but it all depends on what the coach wants. The team comes first. So the coach makes the decision of where he wants the players to play and to perform better for the team.”
In the 2021-22 season, Ponferradina finished eighth in the Segunda Division. La Ponfe will play FC Cartagena in the opening match of the new season on August 15. Nwakali is primed to play a key role in the club’s quest to gain promotion to La Liga this season
