The symbolic lighting ceremony took place at the Katsina Government House during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the National Sports Commission, who were in the state to present the Torch of Unity—an essential tradition ahead of the festival’s commencement.

In his address, Governor Radda expressed gratitude for being part of the historic moment and affirmed that Katsina State will fully participate in the festival. He described the National Sports Festival as a vital platform that unites Nigerian youth and plays a key role in curbing drug abuse and other social vices.

Highlighting his administration’s dedication to sports development, the Governor noted that initiatives such as the establishment of a state-owned football academy have already yielded positive results, with some players from the state securing opportunities to travel to Qatar, Italy, and France.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to launching more developmental programs aimed at enhancing sports in the state.

Earlier, the head of the delegation, Mrs. Mbora Ikana, stated that their visit to Katsina was to formally present the Torch of Unity following its official flag-off by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 25, 2025. She emphasized that the torch symbolizes national unity and peace, with sports serving as a powerful tool for uniting the country’s diverse population.

The 2025 National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway Games,” is slated to take place from May 15th to 30th in Ogun State.
