New Ultimate Fighting Challenge (UFC) welterweight champion of the world, Kamaru Usman has received a message of kudos and congratulation from President Muhammadu Buhari’s senior special assistant on foreign affairs and diaspora, Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Usman (aka The Nigerian Nightmare) made history on Saturday night in Las Vegas, USA, when he became the first fighter born in Africa to win the Mixed-Martial Arts (MMA) belt by defeating American title holder, Tyron Woodley.
Sports247.ng reports that the 31-year-old Auchi, Edo State-born fighter extended his winning streak to 14 and maintained his unbeaten record in the UFC, much to the delight of Dabiri-Erewa.
Dabiri-Erewa congratulated the Texas, USA-based Usman for his feat and stated that the victory was not only a thing of pride to Nigerians but the whole of Africa.
Usman, was born in Benin City but moved to Arlington, Texas, USA at age eight, when his family migrated to God’s Own Country.
He produced the performance of his career to dominate the previously long-reigning champ, Woodley, and win by unanimous points decision.
In response, Dabiri-Erewa further urged Usman to continue to use his talent to benefit mankind, especially African youths in the Diaspora.
She stated in a press release by her special assistant on media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun: “I congratulate you on this wonderful feat, for winning this fight not only for Nigeria but for the African continent.
“We are truly proud of you and urge you to continue to use your professional prowess to extol the virtues of Nigerian heritage. Your shinning beacon serves as inspiration to the Youths of Nigeria.’’
