Kemi Adegbuyi, just 14 years old, stole the spotlight on Wednesday as Robo Queens delivered a stunning 3-0 defeat to Rivers Angels at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
Rivers Angels arrived with a formidable 10-game unbeaten streak, but their run came to a crashing halt at the Onikan waterfront.
The tone was set early when Adegbuyi capitalized on a poor clearance from Rivers goalkeeper Angel Mgbechi, slotting home the opener and sparking a commanding performance by the home side.
Further goals from Mariam Yahaya and Opeyemi Ajakaye sealed the emphatic win, handing the Port Harcourt-based team their first loss in 11 matches.
Speaking after the match, Robo Queens head coach praised his youthful squad for their clinical performance. “It was not a bad game. We took our chances, and sometimes possession doesn’t win games,” he said.
The coach, known for grooming future Super Falcons stars, emphasized the team’s ongoing development project.
“These girls are young and blending well. About nine of them are playing in the Nigerian Women’s League for the first time,” he noted.
“Promoting them from the reserve team to the first team has taken a lot of hard work, energy, and encouragement.”
The coach reserved special praise for Adegbuyi, who played a key role in the victory. “Kemi Adegbuyi is our top upcoming player, but the best is yet to come.”
Robo Queens are in the race to finish among the top 3, a position that guarantees a spot in the season-ending super six play-off.
The team has a total of 19 points after 11 matches played, placing them third on the log, three points ahead of Naija Ratels in fourth.
The top two positions have been sealed by Bayelsa United and Rivers Angels in first and second position, respectively.
