Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and owner of Dosu Joseph Football Academy, Joseph Dosu, narrowly survived a life-threatening car accident in Lagos on Wednesday, October 2nd 2024.
Dosu, who was an instrumental figure in Nigeria’s historic football victory at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, shared the terrifying experience on his Facebook page.
While at a filling station near Ojodu Berger bus stop, a MACK truck loaded with iron reportedly veered off the road and crushed Dosu’s car.

In his Facebook post, Dosu expressed gratitude to God for sparing his life and that of his friend who was with him at the time.
“To God be the glory, another death escape by Grace and Mercy of God,” Dosu wrote.
“I and my friend SM were at Enyo filling station after Ojodu Berger bus stop, to get fuel… when this MACK TRUCK with registration number LND 470 XX, fully loaded with IRON, left the road and crushed my car.”
This incident draws unsettling parallels to the tragic 1997 car accident that ended Dosu’s professional football career.
Back then, the promising goalkeeper had just signed with Italian Serie A club Reggiana when a severe accident left him with injuries that prevented him from continuing his career.
Recalling the 1997 tragedy in an earlier interview, he recounts “What happened was that just after we played against Kenya… I felt I should see my family… I was driving to see them along Ikorodu Road at about 8 p.m.”
“I did not know how it happened, all I know was that the vehicle veered off the road, and I was seriously injured. I give God the glory that I am alive today despite being on crutches.”
Dosu reflected on both incidents, recognizing how fortunate he has been to survive such close brushes with death.
Despite his career-ending injury in 1997, Dosu has remained actively involved in Nigerian football, contributing as a coach and mentor to young talents.
The football community, grateful for his safety, continues to rally around Dosu, who has become a symbol of resilience in Nigerian sports.
