Jay Jay Okocha Defends Super Eagles Coach, Urges Players to Step Up

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha, has called for calm among Nigerian football supporters, insisting that the national team’s struggles are not solely the fault of head coach Finidi George.

Okocha, a legendary playmaker and one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers, believes both the coach and the players are giving their best, but the squad needs to take greater responsibility.

Speaking on the current state of the team, Okocha emphasized that the Super Eagles are playing for more than just themselves—they are carrying the hopes of millions of Nigerians.

“Nigerian football supporters need to ease up on the coach because he is not the main issue. Both the players and the head coach are giving their best, but unfortunately, it hasn’t been enough. However, the players need to be more mindful—they are not just playing for themselves but for the entire nation,” Okocha stated.

With Nigeria currently battling for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the pressure on the team has intensified. The Super Eagles missed out on the last edition in Qatar 2022, and Okocha fears another failure would be devastating for the country.

“There are millions of Nigerians whose emotions are tied to the team’s performance. Imagine the heartbreak of missing out on another World Cup after failing to qualify last time—it would be devastating. The players must understand the weight of their responsibility and fight harder for the country,” he added.

The Super Eagles have faced criticism for inconsistent performances in the ongoing qualifiers, with fans voicing frustrations over the team’s lack of intensity and results. While some have pointed fingers at Finidi George, Okocha’s remarks suggest that the solution lies in a collective effort rather than a change in leadership.

Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifier is a crucial one, and Okocha’s words serve as a rallying call for the players to step up and deliver for the nation.
