Ikorodu City FC have now recorded back to back wins in the 2021/2022 season of the Nigeria National League(NNL) after defeating host team, J’Atete F.C 2-1 in the Week 15 match of the NNL in Warri, Delta state.
After the kickoff was delayed for 30 minutes due to heavy downpour, Okachi’s 16-minute one-touch strike handed Ikorodu City a 1-0 lead against Atete in the first half of the match.
However, the hosts restored the disparity in the 62th minute thanks to a spot kick goal, just five minutes later, Paul Ogunkoya fired a thunderbolt into the hosts’ net to secure the maximum three points for Ikorodu and handed them their first away win this season.
While speaking to Sports247 after the match, Ikorodu City F.C captain Sabastian John disclosed that the team prepared so well for the match and their efforts were crowned with a win at the end.
“Let me just say thank God for everything today because he made it possible for us.
We have been working hard for this from last week till this week and we prepared a lot for today’s match. And with the fighting spirit the team had today, we put all our best, we made sure we worked hard from defense to the attack and we converted the chances we had.
We are very happy with the result of the match. The coach did his job well today likewise the players. We fought as a team so it’s something that makes us happy.”
Commenting on the three matches ultimatum the club’s management issued to them, the defender said the team is ready to prove to the management that they are capable of going top in the league.
“About management giving us three matches, it is nothing for us, it is a challenge for us to prove to them that we can do this and I so much thank God that we have picked up back to back wins so it’s something that we are happy about.
I want to assure you that in the next game and subsequent matches, we will make sure that the team is balanced. Now everything is going well for the team, we will continue winning because we promise ourselves that we’ll be at the top of this league,” he concluded.
Ikorodu City currently sit 6th on the NNL table with 21 points while J’Atete F.C occupy the 11th position with just 13 points.
